Secure a slow rolling feed before returning it

Gather a gentle hand-rolled ball with both hands from a comfortable standing position, show control, then choose a calm return roll.

Check the problem

The child pushes a low ball straight back, or starts returning it before it is securely held. A successful return can hide the missing control. Begin with a still ball, then give the receiver time to hold a gentle roll before doing anything else.

Set up the space and roles

Make two 6 × 8 m stations, each with four corner cones and a 2 m control gate using two more cones. Use twelve cones in total and one ball per pair. Leave a 4 m gap and 2 m outside, giving a 20 × 12 m clear footprint. Feeder 1 begins about 1 m from gatherer 2 behind the gate; 3/4 repeat separately. Both partners may use hands for this closed cooperative exercise. All moving deliveries are gentle hand rolls, with no shots, opponents or match restarts; this does not teach handling a teammate’s foot pass.

Keep the rotation clear

Lower numbers feed first in focused practice; higher numbers feed first in the game. Exchange feeder and gatherer after every three feeds, including missed ones, carrying the order across round pauses. Everyone gathers and feeds throughout both blocks. The return ends the attempt rather than starting an unplanned rapid exchange.

1. One pair and a gentle hand feed

One representative station: 1 feeder and 2 gatherer; 3/4 use the other separate station. Both may handle the ball by agreement. No goal, shooter or opponent is present. One representative station of 2 players is shown. Repeat the setup across 2 stations for all 4 players.

2. Gather before beginning the return

Feeder 1 sends a very slow hand roll. Gatherer 2 gets behind its line, uses a comfortable standing bend and establishes a two-hand hold before releasing again. One representative station of 2 players is shown. Repeat the setup across 2 stations for all 4 players.

Your complete 30-minute plan

Briefing, planned role changes, water and reflection are included. Add rest or stop when needed; shorten active play rather than rushing a transition.

Check, explain and walk the layout

First pick up a still ball with both hands using a comfortable bend while staying on the feet. Keep knees off the surface and avoid diving or dropping onto the ball. Hold it still near the body, look at the partner and only then return it. If this movement is uncomfortable or uncertain, stop and let an adult assist.

Prepare the hand-use task

Alternate placing a still ball for a partner to collect. The collector shows a secure two-hand hold, then carries and hands it back while both stand still. After three turns, swap the placing and gathering roles. Add a very slow roll from about 1 m only when the gatherer agrees and the route is clear.

Focused practice and role changes

Play three rounds of 2 minutes 40 seconds with 20 seconds of rest. Feeder 1 rolls gently toward 2, who adjusts into the ball’s line before arrival, gathers from a comfortable standing bend and pauses with it held. A secure gather earns one shared point; a gentle return roll begins only after that control. The feeder stops the return with a foot and picks it up for the next feed. Swap jobs after three feeds, including misses. A ball too wide or quick is allowed to pass: both stop, then an adult retrieves and resets closer.

Water and reset

Stop every ball, offer water and rest, and check the same stations and clear buffers. Confirm the next hand-use roles before restarting. Extra rest takes priority; shorten the next playing block if needed.

Use control in a cooperative game

Use the same three timed rounds as a cooperative control chain. The feeder may send the roll centrally or a small step to either side, always within a distance the gatherer has agreed to try. Count one point for a secure hold followed by a manageable return. A spill or immediate push resets the chain, with no extra run or penalty. Never chase or drop onto a loose ball. Stop the pair before retrieval; stop both stations for a ball in the shared gap, with adult help beyond the buffer.

Reflect and choose the next step

Ask the gatherer to show when the ball became secure. Repeat a still-ball pickup if the return keeps starting early; holding control is the success to establish first.

Watch for a useful change

  • Gatherer moves into reach before the gentle roll arrives.
  • Both hands control the ball before a return begins.
  • Wide or quick deliveries trigger a stop and easier reset.

Make it easier

Keep the ball still for a comfortable two-hand pickup, with adult help if wanted. Omit rolling entirely while control is uncertain.

When ready

Vary a very slow feed by one comfortable side step, announced before release. Keep about 1 m between partners; add no hard pass, bounce, time limit or dive.

If conditions change

Stop active play when the surface, weather or available clear space is unsuitable. Use an indoor area only if it can hold the full written footprint and buffers. Otherwise keep the ball still, walk through the roles without pressure, and reschedule the live game. Extra rest takes priority over finishing the timetable.
